I participated in the third monthly meeting of the mentorship program hosted by Girls in Tech yesterday. I thought our team members would have time to share the stories that our captain had assigned us for homework. We had to ask three successful people for tips on how they made it into their career. However, the agenda yesterday was so full that we didn’t have enough time to do that. Thus, I decided to share the stories here.

First of all, the first person said that software engineers should utilize three mentalities: finishing tasks on time, to constantly learn and improve oneself, and to avoid participating in illegal activities. He always keeps those mentalities in mind and suggests that younger people should do the same.

The second engineer mentioned that regarding software designing as operating a company enables him to enjoy his job. Initially, he wasn’t enthusiastic about software designing 10 years ago. After shifting his mindset, he reimagined that every project is a company, and that every component within a project is a department within the company. Each component has its own independent obligation. With his change in mindset when it comes to software designing, the codes he designed have had lower coupling and have been easier to maintain. Moreover, things are starting to get interesting. Therefore, he believes a good mindset makes a successful person.

The third person realized trying more things allowed him to obtain more opportunities. He switched to managing products after being a software engineer for two years. With such a big change, he had to start to consider not only how to code, but how to negotiate with customers. His experiences have led him to becoming accomplished in both software engineering and product management. Then, he seized an opportunity and was with Microsoft for 13 years. Moreover, he is a founder of a software engineering training institution. He now encourages young people to try more things in order to benefit their career.

I am grateful to the three people that shared their profound and encouraging stories. I could tell that they are all diligent and keep striving to learn more. Their stories are exemplary.
