Say something about yourself

Hi. My name is Peera Vorapreechapanich. I live in Bangkok and works as a creative copywriter in an advertising agency. I am interested is the ‘weirdness’ of a modern society, people, and politics. For me, photography is a ‘very serious’ hobby!

What is this series?

“Check-in” is a photography series about how people document themselves into the history with their own points of view using the easiest method, selfie. “Winners are the one who write history” is outdated. Because of the technology of mobile phone with camera, now, everyone is a writer of history. This series want to present the way people ‘check-in’ themselves in the important event of the Nation’s history book, the latest political gathering.

How/When did you start this series?

When I went to this political gathering for the first time, I saw a lot of people taking selfie focusing on themselves, not the event. Not only in the real world, at that time, my Facebook news feed was also flooded by selfies from people around me, both related and not related with this gathering. After that, when I went back to this demonstration for many times, I still found more and more people document their own stories with selfies. So, I decided to do this project.

Surprisingly, ‘selfie’ is awarded to be the international Word of the Year by Oxford Dictionary in 2013

This series was photographed during December 2013 — May 2014.

What message do you want to tell the audience?

In that period of time, I saw many complains about how nonsense the selfie is. This series will portray that selfie is not just an unreasonable phenomenon, but it is the latest way to record the history through a personal perspective.

Any news or updates? Exhibition, book, life?

‘Check-In’ was exhibited at Soy Sauce Factory on July 8 — August 19 -2017.

Right now, I am looking forward to make a photography zine with my friends, the photo collective called ‘Fried Rice with Hot Basil’. I am planning to do a new photo series as well.

Peera Vorapreechapanich (b.1988, Bangkok) started his photographic journey with his passion to document the world in his own perspective and to satisfy his curiosity. The turning point in his photographic way was when he was selected to be a participant in Angkor Photo Workshop 2012, which helped him to learn how to see and develop a story.

His photos have won many awards, such as EyeEm Awards 2014 , Kuala Lumpur Photo Awards 2013 and Berlin ‘ The Browse’ Fotofestival 2013. and they have also been selected for “Recorder”, a group photography exhibition at RMA Institute in 2016.
