Founders and College Entrepreneur here with another team profile. Every week we’ll be providing you with a profile on a UIUC student startup. This time, we’re chatting with Cast21.

Description

Cast21 is a company that is developing a new and improved orthopedic cast. Compared to the modern cast, this cast is lighter, more hygienic, more comfortable, easier to apply, and waterproof.

Mission

We’re dedicated to creating better casting experiences by using and developing the latest technologies in medicine and engineering.

Team

Ashley S. Moy (Biomedical Engineer), Justin Brooks (Electrical Engineer), and Jason Troutner (Mechanical Engineer)

How did you meet?

Ashley: I met Jason through mutual friends, and I met Justin after he applied to be our team’s electrical engineer.

Justin: I knew Jason since freshman year, when we became friends in the dorms; I met Ashley after Jason asked me to join his Senior Design team.

If you could give your past self advice, it would be to….

Ashley: Be patient and don’t think linearly.

Justin: You’re surrounded by brilliant advisors and teammates- take note of everything they say!

Jason: The best way to tell the difference between a terrible idea and a great idea is to build it and see what happens. Test everything.

Progress

  • Won Real Elevator Pitch Competition sponsored by Saint Louis University
  • Developed proof of concept

Next Steps

  • More research and development followed by iterations on design
  • Extensive testing
  • Build support for the company through grants, investors, and networking with people already in the medical industry
