A weekly installment of a photo chronicle by Avi Stachenfeld about a congressional race in California’s Central Valley.

“God damn it! I am going to knock on every god damn door!” Emergency room nurse Dotty Nygard is not deterred by her district’s vast fields, orchards, and sprawling suburban developments. Her grassroots campaign for congressional seat is betting on what Nygard does best: look people in the eye, win their trust, and listen.

Avi Stachenfeld, Dotty Nygard at a house party, January 27, 2018. “We can achieve what the rest of the industrialized world has achieved and provide medical coverage for everyone!”

Hefty campaign coffers can buy media ads and impress political endorsers. But there is no substitute for connecting with voters in their homes and proving that you are giving of yourself, not just your donors’ money. So, over the river and through the woods, Nygard and her army of volunteers plan to knock on every “god damn door” in every remote part of the district.
