Nowadays, people like to travel around the world. It’s very convenient to go to other countries because the technology is constantly improving. We need to learn about cultural differences because sometimes you might offend others but you don’t know. Let’s take an example, first, we use thumbs-up to praise people but it is actually bad in Bangladesh. Another one is that, in the US, the “V” sign refers to victory. Some people like to use the same gesture with the back of the hand acting cute when they are taking photos. Actually it is really rude and is considered to be an extremely insulting in the UK, Australia and South Africa. Besides gestures, there are some words that they have same pronunciations but they have totally different meanings in languages. Bonsai is a Japanese act form using containers to build a small tree, but it has another meaning if someone thinks that you are speaking Taiwanese. It means someone is pooping. That’s why we should learn about other cultures to avoid unnecessary problems.
