Fast Track Apprenticeship: Francesca Jackson

Instead of going to university, Francesca Jackson decided to take up an apprenticeship in the Civil Service. She shares her experiences so far as an apprentice.

“It’s a great place to kick-start your career.”

Francesca Jackson, 20, from Preston, went to Runshaw College and left with A-levels in maths, business and accounting. Francesca left college not wanting to go to university because of the debts involved and because there would be no guarantee of a job afterwards.

The Fast Track Apprenticeship scheme appealed to Francesca because she wanted “professional development and a work-life balance”. Francesca is studying towards a Level 4 Chartered Institute of Management Accountants qualification, equivalent to a first year university degree, whilst earning a competitive salary. The Fast Track was the perfect alternative to university.

“I’ve been offered high profile, exciting and enjoyable opportunities.”

Francesca works for the Department for Work & Pensions in Blackpool as a finance apprentice. Her day-to-day role includes managing suppliers’ performance and producing the department’s annual report and accounts. Francesca also had the opportunity to present at the launch of Apprenticeship Week in London and visited the House of Commons.

Francesca said: “The best characteristic about the Fast Track is the amount of opportunities offered; from mentoring students to presenting at a national event. I’ve been offered high profile, exciting and enjoyable opportunities.”

Francesca is an advocate of the scheme, telling people “I think this apprenticeship is one of the most rewarding and exciting schemes out there.” Francesca said the application process was “simple and well-organised” and that those considering applying should do because “it’s a great place to kick-start your career. The Civil Service offers lots of opportunities, encouraging you to improve your skills and gain qualifications.”

The Fast Track Apprenticeship schemes is a 2-year programme with a starting salary is at least £19,500. Find out who can apply and how to apply.
