Astrobiologist Proposes AI’s Cosmic Presence: Are We Alone?
Astrobiologist Suggests AI May Already Exist Across the Cosmos
Prominent astrobiologist Steven Dick, former NASA Chief Historian, believes that much of the universe may be influenced by what he calls post-biological intelligence. He outlines three possibilities for our universe:
- A physical universe where life is a fluke.
- A biological universe where life is common.
- A post-biological universe where biological life has transitioned to AI.
Dick argues that the universe is likely at least partly post-biological, where advanced AI civilizations could replace carbon-based intelligences, potentially creating realities similar to those in the film “The Matrix.”
He emphasizes that the emergence of post-biological intelligence is not inevitable. The age of the universe, spanning at least 13.7 billion years, suggests that intelligent extraterrestrial species could be billions of years old, making their AI far beyond human comprehension.
Detecting such cosmic AI may require different strategies than those used in the search for biological aliens. Dick notes that this could explain why extraterrestrial intelligence remains undetected.
Challenges in Detecting Extraterrestrial AI
Dick acknowledges that the search for extraterrestrial life has encountered many challenges. While the extrasolar planet count has risen to nearly 6000, no solar system has been found that resembles our own.
He remains optimistic about the existence of advanced AI civilizations, which may exist in fabricated structures detached from physical planets. However, he doubts that discoveries like microfossils on Mars or signals from distant stars would significantly impact global society.
In 2013, the World Economic Forum identified the discovery of alien life as one of five “X-factors” that require proactive consideration.
Shifting Perspectives on Our Place in the Universe
Dick reflects on the Copernican worldview, which shifted humanity’s perception of its place in the cosmos. He asserts that our understanding of the universe will depend on whether we inhabit a physical, biological, or post-biological universe.
He encourages thinking creatively about the fundamental principles of life, indicating a profound connection between cosmology and biology that remains largely unexplored.
