Saturday morning: I’ve not been riding for a while now, and it’s time to start the season. Especially since I’ll be shaking my bones on old (but hopefully dry) Belgian cobblestones on my first Ronde Van Vlaanderen come April.

No Friday night blast to prepare this time, just a couple of beers. It’s 2 degrees out, but I’m ready. Ilya and the other guys from the Aspire Group are waiting for me at 9 and I also have a tiny shot of extra motivation: today I’ll be trying the Giro Thermal Bib 3/4. Yes, 3/4 is enough for riding in late winter — everything gets a lot warmer after the first 10 km anyway.

As far as first rides of the year go, this is a cool one: almost 100 km of flat and silent roads in the Brandenburg countryside, average speed around 24 km/h. During the 4 hours I just eat one energy bar, and feel good. The company was perfect too. Sure enough, we’re loosening off the components one by one, with a few injuries jumping out from the blankets. It’s hard to push so much if you haven’t been training, but I still enjoy the chats with Ilya and the smooth signals from Brian.

It’s time to talk about Bibs now, but feel free to drop me a line if you still want to know more about the ride.

The Giro Thermal Bibs 3/4 are really comfy, no scratches from the seams, and no issues dealing with the weather. Everything stays perfectly warm: you really won’t feel the cold with this bib, even if you’re riding with Subzero in his natural habitat. The material is cool too: elastic and comfortable, it keep everything in place and my knees had no problems on the ride — something that can happen with age.

The bib’s breathability is another plus, and some of the thoughtful touches are every bit as useful as finding that last energy bar in your pocket — the hidden pocket you can stash it in, for example. Yes, those pockets used to be for radios, but come on — nobody takes those on weekend rides anymore.

All in all, I’d really suggest the Giro Bib Thermal 3/4 if you’re looking for something black, warm, comfortable and really, really smart!
