Blue Star Museums open doors to military families for summer
This summer, museums in California and across the country will simultaneously salute the men and women of the U.S. military by way of no-cost admission to their exhibitions and collections. Opening this Memorial Day weekend and continuing on through Labor Day, active-duty military personnel and up to five members of their family will have complimentary access to more than 100 museums in California and over 2,000 nationwide, thanks to an initiative from the National Endowment for the Arts, developed in partnership with Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and participating institutions.
Blue Star Museums represent a vast range of areas of interest, including fine arts, history, and science; as well as children’s museums, zoos, and nature centers. The list of museums for 2018 is available here.
In a press release last week, the NEA called the program “one way our nation’s museums can express appreciation to our military for their service and share with them America’s cultural treasures,” providing “a way for military families to feel connected to their community, especially for those families who have recently relocated through a change of station.”
Museums will be continually added to the list throughout the summer. Free admission is available for those currently serving, including all military branches—Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard; Active Duty and Reservists; National Guardsman (regardless of status); U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps; and NOAA Commissioned Corps.
