Many of us grew up with the arts as a regular part of the school day.

We drew self-portraits, we formed awkward ceramic bowls, we made cacophonous sounds in music class.

We loved it. And whether we knew it or not, we benefited from it.

Students who learn arts at school score higher on tests, have better attendance records, significantly lower dropout rates, and are more than twice as likely to graduate from college.

Yet less than half of California’s students today have access to art at their schools. And those who stand to get the most out of it— like low-income students and English-language learners — are the least likely to be given the opportunity. We can — and we should — do better.

Since the Keep Arts in Schools Voluntary Tax Contribution Fund was established in 2014, more than $1.2 million has been raised to fund arts programming in California’s schools. Donations from the fund are critical to the California Arts Council’s efforts to expand arts education grant programs to reach more students than ever before.

We’re a little over two weeks away from this year’s tax deadline. If you have yet to file, take the opportunity to show your support for these important creative learning experiences for our state’s young people. Help keep arts in schools by making a tax-deductible donation of $1 or more to the Keep Arts in Schools Fund, found in the Voluntary Contribution Section of your state return. One hundred percent of your contribution will go to support arts education programming supported by the California Arts Council.

Every dollar counts. Please join us in supporting arts education across California. Learn more at www.keepartsinschoolsfund.org.

The mission of the California Arts Council is to advance California through the arts and creativity. Discover your state arts agency at arts.ca.gov.
