Quantum computing is a cutting-edge field of study that promises to transmute the world of computation as we’ve known it. By controlling the principles of quantum mechanics, this new era of computing holds the potential to outperform classical computers on certain tasks, enabling advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), cryptography, medicine, and more. At the same time, conventional supercomputers, like the recently revealed El Capitan, continue to push the limits of classical computing and tackle the dense scientific and national security challenges.

What is Quantum Computing?

Quantum computing relies on the principles of quantum mechanics, the branch of physics that deals with phenomena at the microscopic scale of atoms and subatomic particles. Classical computers store and process information using binary digits (bits), which represent either a 0 or a 1. In contrast, quantum computers use quantum bits or qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously due to the wonders of superposition and entanglement.

  • Superposition allows a qubit to be in a state of 0, 1, or both 0 and 1 at the same time. This enables quantum computers to perform various calculations concurrently.
  • Entanglement is a phenomenon where qubits become linked, such that the state of one qubit can influence the…
