There are many unsung heroes among us — dedicated to bettering the mental health of their fellow Californians. Each May during Mental Health Awareness Month we announce our Mental Health Champions and share their stories, with the hopes of honoring them and inspiring others whose selfless work inspires us all.

“A crucial part of our mission is to inspire leadership,” said Steinberg Institute CEO Karen Larsen. “Our Mental Health Champions are clear examples of demonstrated leadership in many areas of mental health. From providing life-saving crisis care to ensuring that California’s youth learn about the importance of mental health, our 2022 champions are truly inspiring.”

This year the Steinberg Institute is partnering with Sacramento-based Mission Minded Media to share the stories of each of our four champions. Each Tuesday this month on our website we’ll publish videos and stories highlighting their work and personal journey that led them to have an outsized impact on mental health for their fellow Californians.

Our first 2022 Mental Health Champion (announced today) is high school teacher Chris Miller. Thanks to his tireless efforts, students across the state will receive mental health education as part of required curriculum. Learn more about Chris and watch his powerful personal story here.

We’ll announce each of our four champions on Tuesdays throughout May on our website, so be sure to follow the Steinberg Institute on social media(Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) to find out who they are and what drives their passion to help others.

California State of Mind is published by the Steinberg Institute, an independent nonprofit organization working to focus public attention on mental health issues in California and to advance sound public policies that can help people in our state get the assistance and support they need.
