On August 4th, 2020 more than 300,000 people lost their homes, hundreds lost their lives and thousands suffered injuries due to a massive explosion in Beirut, Lebanon. In a country already experiencing acute political and economic challenges, the current tragedy has further increased the hardship people face. Join IBM in the Call for Code® Spot Challenge Beirut to help those delivering aid to this community need.

We are calling all developers to contribute to an open-source solution previously submitted to the Call for Code® Global Challenge to help humanitarian organizations active in Beirut ensure optimized distribution of relief resources using a cloud-based and data-driven platform.

For this initiative, IBM Developer’s hosted a Crowdcast webinar introducing IBM Cloud Services. The panel included Asna JK, Lungelo Sikobi, Mridul Bhandari & Khalil Faraj, Cloud Developer Advocates from IBM MEA.

Asna JK & Lungelo Sikobi spoke about Secure your Applications using IBM Cloud App ID and introduced App Identity & Access Adapter which is “ the adapter can be configured to work with any OIDC compliant identity provider, which enables it to control authentication and authorization policies in all environments including frontend and backend applications. It does it all without any change to your code or the need to redeploy your application.

After this, Mridul Bhandari demonstrated how to build a Mobile Application to facilitate Community Collaboration. The application was built on React Native with Node.js for iOS and Android Operating Systems. The application utilized IBM Cloud services such as Watson Assistant & CouchDB instance using Cloudant, and location services from HERE Maps API.

Lastly, Khalil Faraj demonstrated how to build a Web Application with Node-RED. He built a COVID-19 virtual assistant with voice capabilities and deployed it as a Web Application. He utilized services such as Watson Assistant & Speech to Text on IBM Cloud.
