After another year of the growing tech for good community answering the call and submitting to this year’s Call for Code Global Challenge, it’s ever more inspiring to see the level of innovation that springs from when code and community collide.

Although this year’s submissions for the Global Challenge officially closed on July 31, the mission toward a more resilient, sustainable and more equitable planet that cares for those within it remains a top priority.

Call for Code is an always on platform, offering a wide range of open source projects that are looking for your contribution. These projects are hosted by the Linux Foundation, and provide an opportunity for those looking to build their dev skills with a platform to do so — all while improving tech solutions that ladder up to helping the world at large. If you are new to open source, check out this short explainer.

These open source projects address critical societal topics ranging from climate change to racial justice that make real tangible impact on the world. Check out a few of the projects below:

Build Change: Hurricanes and typhoons are growing stronger as a result of climate change, and together with earthquakes they continue to disproportionately impact people living in emerging nations where substandard housing is exceptionally commonplace. Build Change, through their open source project, ISAC-SIMO, offers a mobile app that can help more people detect construction issues before they become life-threatening.

Prometeo: Firefighters are constantly at risk from the smoke and toxins they inhale during a blaze. Prometeo uses IoT devices to track exposure and pull firefighters from the field before their health is compromised. Winner of the 2019 Call for Code Global Challenge, Prometeo is running field tests around the world and is available as the Pyrrha open source project.

Call for Code for Racial Justice open source projects seek to combat systemic racism through technology. CFCFRJ addresses this highly important concept through three core topics: Police & Judicial Reform and Accountability, Diverse Representation, and Policy & Legislation Reform. There are a number of projects seeking your contribution — answer the call.

As far as the Global Challenge goes, the winners of the 2021 Global Challenge will be announced in November — be on the lookout for more information as the date approaches. In the meantime, be sure to contribute your code to the open source projects.

Build your skills. Save the planet. Answer the call!
