The University of Edinburgh, School of Informatics, IBM, and the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) recently hosted a virtual hackathon, as part of the 2020 Call for Code University Edition, to engage students from all academic disciplines in developing new ideas and technological solutions related to Water Sustainability, Energy Sustainability, and Disaster Resilience — which are critical components in addressing climate change.

More than 900 students from 100+ universities such as the University of Edinburgh, University of Nairobi, and Botswana University participated. Monetary prizes were awarded to the top three teams of each category and project solutions were judged on completeness and transferability, effectiveness and efficiency, design and usability, and creativity and innovation.

At the awards ceremony, students heard remarks from leaders and experts from the University of Edinburgh, IBM, and CGI U ’20 alumni Adedoyin Adeleke who said, “In the world today, all of us can come together to develop solutions — no matter how big or small, to drive change.” As a next step, Adedoyin encouraged student participants to take their ideas and apply to CGI U. Selected students will gain access to a virtual social impact curriculum, networking events, tailored mentorship, and more. The deadline to apply to CGI U is January 15th (cgiu.org/apply).
