For the second year, the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) and IBM partnered on the Call for Code Global Challenge for a new University Edition in 2020 to engage students in taking on pressing global challenges such as COVID-19 and climate change. During this unprecedented year, students again ideated and worked to develop innovative solutions to these issues using technology and compete for the grand prize of $10,000 USD.

Together, IBM and CGI U engaged more than 59,000 students around the world this year in tackling these challenges that impact us all. The inaugural winner? Pandemap — a team of five international undergraduate students at the University of California Berkeley, a CGI University Network member. The team developed a solution in response to the shift in education due to the pandemic and the challenges it has presented in monitoring crowds and social distancing.

Their solution, Pandemap, is an intuitive map and destination recommendation app that uses an array of resources to provide insightful analytics on crowd and social distancing data to make recommendations to users — university students, staff, and faculty, on what heavily trafficked areas to avoid and which locations are ideal to go to.

Learn more about Pandemap in the video below, and congratulations Pandemap!

In addition to the 2020 Call for Code Global Challenge, CGI U and IBM co-hosted twelve Call for Code University Edition Hackathons to further engage students in using technology to address social issues at a variety of intersections. Topics included:

Thank you to all students for their creative ideas and work to make a difference by addressing some of society’s most pressing challenges.
