As the pandemic continues, students find themselves coping with prolonged disruption to their education. Learning from home is harder than anyone could have imagined, and factors like access to technology and space to study are threatening to leave many behind. Developers all over the world are answering the Call for Code to help solve some of these educational challenges brought on by COVID-19.

Rashid Davis, Founding Principal at Pathways in Technology Early College High School, Brooklyn, NY, is excited about the potential of AI in remote learning. “Technologies like AI can help offer personalized training programs and interactivity, even for students isolated at home,” he said.

It’s not just personalized learning Davis is interested in, though. He sees AI as a means to resolve other issues. “If students can access AI with a phone, that would be great. The approach could be the same as screensharing and then projecting on a nearby surface to view the content,” he said. Deploying remote lessons in this manner could minimize educational technology to a phone, which most students have. Plus, a wall or other blank surface is easily accessible for students.

Our schools were designed for education with ample space and resources. Our homes, in contrast, are custom fit to our family lifestyles, which are in flux due to the pandemic. “Now, students are taking care of siblings and loved ones. They have multiple roles at home and learning may not be the priority,” Davis said. Students deserve learning opportunities that meet them where they are physically, technologically and emotionally.

Want to join the fight and improve remote education? Get going with this starter kit. You have until July 31 to submit your idea for the 2020 Call for Code Global Challenge for a chance at seeing it deployed!
