Kode With Klossy is an inspiring organization for girls aged 13–18, and an active supporter of Call for Code that affords scholars the opportunity to attend free, 2-week code camps where they learn about the fundamentals of either Web or Mobile App Development. As a part of this experience, teams collaborate and create their respective application in the form of a final project.

One final project that stood out for its ingenuity and prospects of making positive societal impact came from Team Womxn’s Health. The team was made up of four scholars, Sidney, Jordan, Aminah, and Serkute who set out on a mission to promote best practices and equality in the healthcare industry.

The team firmly believes that womxn are too often either misdiagnosed by doctors and specialists or commonly have their symptoms dismissed. The team believes the reason for these high rates of misdiagnosis in womxn is often fueled by the lack of research specific for certain conditions, disorders, and illnesses that affect womxn. The team also believes that these outcomes are even worse for womxn of color who are at higher risk of having issues communicating with medical professionals or even dying during a surgical procedure, prenatal care, and childbirth.

The team wanted to build a mechanism to serve as the catalyst for developing higher levels of consideration in regard to how womxn — especially minority womxn are affected by current beliefs and practices in the medical field. They landed on the idea of building a website equipped with educational and informative resources to promote change in the healthcare industry. The team stated “While educating our community on these issues, we also hope to encourage strides to be made in medical research with a goal of equity and inclusivity.”.

The team’s method to constructing this website followed a “divide and conquer” approach. Utilizing a number of resources such as W3Schools and Stack Overflow, and leveraging the Kode With Klossy instructors and mentor network, team members Sidney, Jordan, Aminah, and Serkute were all encouraged to to aim high and think more about what they want to create rather than what they think they are capable of creating. All with different backgrounds and knowledge of technology, the team enjoyed the uplifting, welcoming platform that Kode With Klossy provided. Serkute mentioned: “By joining Kode With Klossy, I knew I would be able to once again use technology for good and inspire those around me to pursue the things that captivate them- no matter who they are.”

So what’s next for Team Womxn’s Health? In an effort to foster an environment that allows womxn to feel comfortable during their medical experiences, they’d like to implement a chat function or discussion board in their application so users can receive advice and share their experiences anonymously; the safe space is intended to help show people, whether they’ve been affected by medical malpractice or not, that they are not alone in their respective battle.

Using tech for good has never been more important than right now. Whether it be mitigating societal disparities, being the helping hand to communities in need, or simply wanting to be a part of something bigger than yourself, here is your opportunity to join an open source project through Call for Code to achieve just that.
