These are unprecedented and difficult times, which makes it all the more inspiring to see people stepping up and using their ingenuity to take positive action. On June 12 in Seoul, South Korea, over 215 people on 50 different teams put their innovative ideas to the test in the 2020 Call for Code Korea Hackathon.

The event, hosted by IBM Korea, the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Korea Green Foundation, asked people to code solutions in response to COVID-19 or climate change. The event drew a widely diverse participant pool, including students, office workers, teachers, activists and developers.

Participants jumped right in, leveraging freely available IBM technology — AI, data science, IoT, blockchain, and more — to jump-start solutions to get us through the COVID-19 crisis and make headway on climate change

One winning team, “Let’s Go to School,” comprised of four elementary school teachers and one engineering student, addressed the heavy workload teachers are facing during COVID-19 in an app. Their solution helps teachers manage student attendance and includes a chatbot to respond to simple inquiries from parents and students.

“I was happy to develop a practical app that can help teachers struggling with heavy workloads refocus on teaching,” said Joo-hong Eom, a teacher on the “Let’s Go to School” team.

When it comes to Call for Code, everyone has a role to play. From the developer enthusiast writing code for an IoT solution, to a teacher with an idea that can make true change in creating new practices in education, this challenge spans across every problem solver that is looking to make a difference.

The power to make true, positive impact is in your hands. Submit your idea by July 31 and answer the 2020 Call for Code Global Challenge.
