A decade ago, the United Nations recognized access to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right and called for international efforts to help countries provide safe, clean, accessible and affordable drinking water and sanitation.

Despite the recognition, populations around the world still struggle to access clean water and reliable, safe sanitation. By 2025, the World Health Organization estimates that half of the world’s population will be living in water-stressed areas — either without enough water to support the area’s people or lacking water clean enough to use. At the same time, 2 billion people lack basic sanitation facilities such as toilets or latrines, and unsafe sanitation environments are linked to the transmission of diseases such as cholera, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio.

Fortunately, there is hope. The 2021 Call for Code Global Challenge aims to take on climate change by bringing together developers and problem solvers from around the world to create new tech solutions; with one of the primary goals being clean water for all. If you’re someone who wants to make an impact, but may not know where to start, the Call for Code team has your back. By answering the call and joining this tech for good movement, you’ll have access to various starter kits that will help you kickstart your solution.

As it pertains to unlocking clean water for the whole world, check out the Clean Water and Sanitation starter kit. The starter kit shows you how to build and implement an API for water data collection and dissemination. The API will query geolocations of sustainable water sources, simplify coordination and funding for water construction projects, explore educational tools to support water sustainability and clean water access and more.

Tackling climate change is a tall order — but together, we can fight back. Ready to get involved? Check out the Clean Water and Sanitation starter kit and start building today. Answer the call!
