There’s never been a more important time to “control what you can control”. COVID-19 has left so many people feeling helpless without anything or anyone to turn to, and this has had tremendous rippling effects as it relates to the mental health battles many are now enduring. Fortunately, Call for Code has been a beacon of hope for those taking on issues like these. Whether it is teaming with best-in-class health care partners to create The Call for Code Spot Challenge: Mental health in a time of crisis, or providing the tools for challenge participants to build solutions to address mental health in their own way, it’s the actions taken around the world working together due to Call for Code that are helping people battle their most pressing problems. Luckily, Roby Health Partner was a solution created by a group that decided to answer the call, and help people with their mental health.

The 2020 Call for Code Challenge team creating Roby Health Partner comes from Chile. The team believes that there has been a sharp rise in mental illness, such as depression, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns — particularly with the adolescent population. Using IBM Watson Assistant and other cloud functions, the Roby Health Partner solution is an app that presents users with a 3D avatar that can help offer much-needed support during tough times, and help fortify mental health. The app can identify anxiety, sadness, and disturbed sleep patterns. The multidisciplinary team from Chile uses speech-to-text and other technologies to help improve mental health.
