Winners of the Vice-Chancellor’s Social Impact Awards 2020
Cambridge Hub is delighted to announce the winners of the 2020 Vice-Chancellor’s Social Impact Awards.
With the kind support of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stephen Toope, Cambridge Hub launched the second edition of the Vice-Chancellor’s Social Impact Awards this year to recognise and celebrate exceptional achievement in social impact amongst University of Cambridge students.
We would like to thank all the students who participated in this process. From a total of forty outstanding nominations, the panel of judges had the difficult task of choosing nine winners, across three categories: three Undergraduate students, three Masters students and three PhD researchers.
These students came from a variety of courses and levels of study, and have been involved in a large range of social and environmental issues. The judging panel consisted of Dr Alison Wood, Academic Director at Homerton Changemakers; Dr John Munns, Fellow and Tutor of Magdalene College; Mark Freeman, Interim Chief Executive Officer at CCVS; and Pippa Smith, CEO of Student Hubs.
Considering the current unexpected circumstances prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic, this year the awards were presented by Professor Toope in a virtual meeting on the 6th May, where the winners had the opportunity to share their inspiring social action journeys.
The Vice-Chancellor spoke about how incredibly proud and impressed he was with students’ commitment to social action in Cambridge.
“This year we received extraordinary nominations, students showed great talent across all fields of endeavour, grappling with really difficult social issues. They showed creativity, commitment, of course, but also entrepreneurship.
Our communities need ideas, they need the energy of students, perhaps more than ever before. It really is a difficult time and I think the resilience of our communities is being tested. So it is just marvellous to see the ideas that these students have generated.
I want to thank the Cambridge Hub for sponsoring these awards, but also for serving constantly as a focal point for student engagement across Cambridge.
