HOME TO SOME OF LONDON’S OLDEST SOUTH ASIAN RESTAURANTS, THE DRUMMOND STREATERY LAUNCHES FOR A SUMMER OF OUTDOOR EATING, BRINGING A NEW LEASE OF LIFE TO THE ICONIC STREET

Drummond Streatery

JUNE 2021 // Sauce Communications are proud to announce their partnership to promote The Drummond Streatery project: a collaborative effort between Euston Town BID, Drummond Street traders, Jan Kattein Architects and Camden Council, to bring new life to this historic street just a minute’s walk from Euston Square Station.

The Streatery project looks to regenerate, revive and reignite a rich and culturally diverse neighborhood of businesses spanning South Asian, African, Turkish and Chinese roots. The newly installed carnivalesque outdoor eating areas on the recently part-pedestrianized street, hope to welcome old and new diners to the 14 participating restaurants and cafes for fun, food and festivities with a summer of events soon to be announced.

The first step in a range of initiatives and wider transformational scheme for the Drummond Street neighborhood, The Drummond Streatery, launches this month to welcome in the London summer for a season of outdoor eating and rediscovery of some of London’s best independent and family run authentic restaurants, including many of the capital’s oldest South Asian restaurants.

Intending to be transformed into a ‘People’s High Street’ and instilling a new sense of pride for the local people and the community that use it, renowned high street regeneration experts Jan Kattein Architects teamed up with Building Bloqs, drawing inspiration from carnivals and parades from South America and South Asia to bring a sense of celebration to the street, following years of disruption from HS2 construction.

Commissioned by Euston Town BID who are leading on the ‘Drummond Street Vision’ regeneration project, funded by the BID and HS2’ Business & Local Economy Fund, The Drummond Streatery includes flexible street furniture, to be used as outdoors seating units which can seat up to 64 outdoors and can also be utilised as market stalls or parklets accordingly, all moving towards making Drummond Street a pedestrian friendly, forward-thinking and authentic food destination, with the local community central to its enjoyment.

The outdoor space will look to serve the range of wonderful restaurants and traders on the street, where diners can hop off the train at Euston Square station, wander from Warren Street, and skip around the corner from Great Portland Street, and find a local bazaar of brilliant eats. Whether to enjoy samosa chaat in the sun from Shah Tandoori or gulab jamuns from Guptas, diners are encouraged to bring their family and friends to one of London’s most untapped neighbourhoods for a tasty trip off the beaten track.

Sultan Chowdhury owner of one local favourite, Ravi Shankar, said of the project: ‘Drummond Street has had a very challenging time, but we are determined to make this neighbourhood a success — it has so much to offer in culture and cuisine. We are a group of independent businesses with our own specialties and authentic family recipes, and the opening of the streatery is a turning point for the area — it has made the street exciting and beautiful, to match all the delicious food available here! I’m excited for the next stages of this project to revive our home.’

Georgie Street, Head of Projects, Euston Town: Drummond Street’s businesses are key to the area’s identity, and it’s so important that Euston doesn’t lose them amidst the development and changes taking place. The combination of characterful traders with their stories to tell and the vision of Jan Kattein Architects and our other contractors, is bringing this project to life. I think the spirit of what we’re trying to achieve has been captured wonderfully by the streatery with its joyous aesthetic, bringing new energy to Drummond Street, to shine a light on this fabulous destination.’

Jan Kattein, Jan Kattein Architects:Drummond Street is unlike any other place in London. The Drummond Streatery is only a small part of a much bigger vision for the high street aimed at preserving and celebrating a very special cultural heritage. The success of the project is the result of a different approach to designing urban spaces, one that is based on collaboration and exchange between residents, businesses, the local authority and Euston Town BID. Working this way can help the high street to transition and secure its’ future.

The Drummond Streatery, now open for diners to visit, was installed on June 9 and will be celebrating its arrival with a streatery carnival later this summer. The wider ‘Drummond Street Vision’ scheme of which The Drummond Streatery kicks off, includes refreshed shop frontage redesign, creative lighting schemes, specially commissioned murals and the creation of a new shared garden space, all to come.

The Drummond Street Vision

The Drummond Street Vision regeneration scheme intends to celebrate and preserve the character and identity of the area’s communities, who have been impacted by HS2 construction and the recent lockdowns. Euston Town BID partnered with Camden Council to commission Jan Kattein as the lead architects following being awarded a record sum from HS2’s Business & Local Economy Fund, matched by Euston Town BID.

Euston Town Business Improvement District is funded by businesses in the area who pay a membership levy, which is then used to leverage further funding for ambitious projects that enhance the public realm and improve the trading environment.
