Planning of a RV trip around Alaska & Yukon

This is not a travel blog at the moment, just some doodle on stuff we need to think about when planning a trip to Alaska and/or the Yukon. What parks to visit, which trips to do and supplies to take.

“The Bible of the North Country travel”

Some very good information is available from “the Bible of the North”, the Milepost.

It’s normally published in book form, but it’s website is a very comprehensive source of information.

Their website includes a lot of weblinks to other great sources of information, like the road conditions in British Columbia (drivebc.ca) and the like. For the lower parts of North America, I normally just have a RandMcNally road atlas with me. Nice and compact, fits nicely in the cover of a suitcase. But for the North Country, you need a bit more information about road types and locations for camping and getting provisions.

Truck Camper

Most of us know the common types of RV’s that are for rent in the USA and Canada. My ideal type of camper would definately be a Truck Camper. Especially due to the fact that there are a lot of roads made of gravel, which makes a class C or a “big rig” really slow and cumbersome. The campervan (“Vanconversion”) would be my number two pick. You can get the Truck Camper with a diesel engine, which makes for more torque and better fuel economy in the outdoors.

A drawback of the truck-camper or campervan would be the number of people you can transport. If you have a family of four or more, then you will be “stuck” with a class C RV. Which tend to have more comforts against being a bit slower on gravel.

Paul Nicklen's amazing Grizzly Bear picture.

The februar issue of National Geographic Magazine has an article on the Yukon, p.96. It starts with this amazing picture of a Yukon Grizzly Bear by Paul Nicklen with the text by Tom Clynes. Although the article does not paint the most beautiful picture how the search for minerals threatens these wild outdoors, it does have some images that I have in mind while thinking about traveling through the Yukon and Alaska. You can read the full article online, nowadays. I've found it here at the NGM Website: Yukon: Canada's Wild West.

"The Azure Lake in the Ogilvie Mountains is on my bucket list!"

At Azure lake in Well's Gray Provincial Park

Also the next page has this stunning picture of a place called Azue Lake in the rugged Ogilvie Mountains, which is on my "Places to See" bucket list. Maybe we do need a little bit more practise in the outdoors on canoeing, maybe we could go back to Well's Gray Provincial Park in British Columbia, also a great place to go, quite a bit easier accessible. Learning some canoeing on Clearwater Lake, or Azure Lake over there.
