Now that Olympics is over, we are nearing the end of the summer. After five days competing blue versus white, we are back together as one camp. There are a few more special treats we look forward to before departing. As the summer is winding down, I would like to recognize our CITs; this is their final summer and last few days as IHC Campers.
For this special division, the coming days are an emotional roller coaster full of ups and downs, and lots of tears. When I was a CIT, stepping onto the departure bus were some of the most difficult steps I’ve ever taken; it felt like diving headfirst into the unknown.
And once that bus rolls out, it marks the final moments of being an IHC Camper. After spending seven to ten summers at camp, it is truly the end of an era for these young adults; it’s hard imagining spending your summer any other way. This is why so many CITs come back as staff members. It’s not the end of their IHC Story but simply the start of a new chapter.
Last week, we were driving back to camp after our day off. Music was playing softly as we explored the scenic roads of Equinunk, Pennsylvania. Then, all of a sudden, a bright golden-orange sun peaked out above the tree line revealing a breathtaking sunset. With the blink of an eye, everyone was silently fixated on it. No one said a word. In that moment, I thought to myself — what an amazing summer this has been. Despite challenges, the Pandemic, and our own hectic lives, we are so incredibly privileged to be here in this beautiful place, living in the moment.
Kids are laughing and dancing on the bunk line not worrying about appearances, makeup, or social media. Here, we can be maskless. Care free.
There are only three days left. Let’s make the most of it and have a strong ending to an unforgettable summer.
