Farewell, Dodo

When you came to me,

You were softened.

Plush.

Moist.

***

I flicked the cooker on.

Oiled the pan.

Dipped your chunky slices in.

When you came back to me,

You were blackened.

Ash.

Rust.

***

I flicked the cooker off.

Scrubbed the pan.

Scraped your charred remains out.

Author’s note: “Dodo” (pronounced /doh-doh/) is the colloquial Nigerian term used to refer to fried plantains. The inspiration behind this piece was to describe the unpleasant experience of inadvertently ending up with burnt dodo, with a blend of personification.
