I woke up one morning last week and everyone was talking about building a tunnel. What a peculiar world we live in I thought. And what a change in scenery.

To put things into context, it was our premier’s idea. The 401, one of North America’s most treacherous motorways, as you know, is quite busy. Guess building a tunnel gets the job done? Give it 200 years and $200 billion, and just maybe we’ll have something that works.

But in all seriousness, as cool as it would be to have a tunnel under the 401 or anywhere for that matter, and as cool as it is to drive under a tunnel, like in Shanghai, or Tokyo, or through the Swiss mountains, a tunnel is not what we need. And also not what we can afford.

It’s not that there isn’t money. Money they’ll find, or borrow.

It’s that there isn’t time.

We need a solution that can work quickly and policies that can be put into place quickly because we can’t keep doing this. Toronto’s population will only climb. Toronto’s streets will only get busier.

We need a sustainable and efficient public transit system. I’m not suggesting us spend a gazillion dollars building another subway line tomorrow —…
