Nestled within the serene landscapes of Victoria, Canada, lies a horticultural masterpiece that transcends time and captivates the senses — The Butchart Gardens. This former limestone quarry came to life in 1912 when Jennie Butchart began transitioning the property from a dull gray industrial site into the attraction we know and love today.

In 2004, it received its designation as a National Historic Site of Canada. It attracts over a million visitors each year.

Here, history and horticulture intertwine. Jennie Butchart’s transformation of the quarry into the iconic Sunken Garden marked the genesis of what would become one of the world’s most celebrated gardens. The Sunken Garden is the largest and most popular area of the gardens for visitors.
