By mid-September and October 2015, the magnitude of the Syrian refugee crisis is becoming apparent to most people.

The articles in this publication highlight articles that relate to the Syrian refugee situation, the Canadian government’s preparations to resettlement them, and/or the Waterloo Region’s local efforts to prepare for their arrival.

Let’s start with a cautionary article entitled “Three mistakes we keep repeating when it comes to refugees” which has a sub-title of “We think of ourselves as a haven for refugees, but Canada has consistently floundered in offering help”: The Article

Next an excellent perspective piece on the 16,000 people who have already been rescued on the Mediterranean Sea in the past six months by DWB and the wider failure of UN member states to meet their obligations to care for and to extend safe passage and asylum to those who fear for their safety. It’s an open letter called “The Right to Flight” on the response from Canada and the international community to the ongoing refugee and migrant crisis, written by Doctors Without Borders (DWB) Canada: The Article

Amnesty releases eight point plan in response to refugee crisis: The Article

This article is from the perspective of Anabaptist Mennonites and how the current refugee crisis is top of mind, including what the Bible says about how we should respond, and questions about “Does religion make people intolerant?”: The Article

MCC Canada puts out a video entitled “Sponsoring a refugee family in 4 steps” which describes what is involved and how to get started: The Video

Next, an article entitled “As resources dwindle, churches worry refugee response will slow.” It also discusses the aging demographics of some churches that used to sponsor more refugees and wonders how churches will keep up with the demand: The Article

An interesting video about people who have previously arrived in Canada as refugees over the years, one Syrian as recently as three weeks ago, and their comments about the current situation: The Video

A Facebook Page called “Every Life Matters” which shares news articles about refugees: The Page
