Winning first place indica at the high times cannabis cup 2004 God Bud is in a league of its own. God Bud is an indica dominant cultivar first bred by Jordan of the Islands in British Columbia. British Columbia has been known as the Canadian California due to its ideal growing conditions and thriving cannabis community. God Bud is a hybrid from breeding Hawaiian sativa to Purple Skunk making this strain a perfect balance of uplifting and relaxing.

Criteria for review

Smell: The smell of cannabis is equally as important as the effects, a cultivar with no nose feel will sell poorly compared to one you can recognize by scent. Cannabis naturally produces pungent odours so for a plant to regress from its original state would require a slip up on the breeder’s end.

Appearance: You can throw a steak and mashed potatoes in a blender and it will taste the same, but who wants to eat that? Like our food, the appearance of cannabis is equally important when making a purchase. A well-trimmed glistening bud will always attract more eyes than something poorly trimmed, brown and whispy.

Taste: terpenes and terpenoids are volatile hydrocarbons found naturally occurring in the cannabis plant. A higher concentration of terpenes and terpenoids allow for a more concentrated flavor and smell when consuming cannabis. Have you ever smelled cannabis that had a pungent lemon scent? You can thank the terpenes and terpenoids for that. On top of creating the recognizable scent and flavor, the terpenes and terpenoids modulate the effect one feels when under the effects of cannabis.

Effects: While everyone would expect effects to be on top of this list the reality is most cannabis connoisseurs care about the full spectrum of the experience. Like a fine wine, the effects of the wine plays a small role in the entire experience. For that reason, we take everything the plant has to offer into consideration in order to make a fair assessment.

Smell

The moment you open the container you are welcomed to a world of berries and lavender. God Bud has a unique smell, unlike any cannabis I’ve smelt before. God Bud is floral and lacks the musty “dank” smell many look for in quality cannabis. I contribute this fruity smell to its sativa parent as sativas are generally known to offer floral smells compared to the heavy musky indica. This is one strain I find myself opening the container for no other reason than to smell it. The uniqueness of its smell helps identify it from any other strain on the market. The breeders must have taken that into consideration as it greatly helps develop a brand identity.

Appearance

To those who say perfection doesn’t exist in nature, God Bud would like to have a word with you. Never in my years of using and learning about cannabis have I seen such a perfect bud structure. The bud is dense with a perfect trim job. The first thing you will notice is how there is not a single fan leaf left on the bud meaning this manicure job was done with the utmost care. In places where cannabis has been legal for some time, this method of trimming may be the gold standard, but in Canada, the bar is set quite low. Hopefully, this will set the precedent for what properly trimmed cannabis should look like in Canada.

Taste

Upon the first inhale you will notice subtle hints of berry and mint. As the smoke dances around your palate, you will notice a subtle berry flavor. As you take the smoke into your lungs you will notice little to no burn which shocked me. This is only further confirmation as to how perfectly this cultivar was trimmed and cured. The smoothness of the smoke and white ash is a clear indication this strain was handled with passion and care.

Effects

Some may feel naming this cultivar after a deity is a tad self-aggrandizing, that is until you try it. Within a minute of consuming God Bud, you are transported into a world of relaxation and euphoria. This cultivar in high enough doses will make you question life and your current path. Be careful if you’re new to cannabis because this cultivar can grab hold and not let go. If taken in smaller doses, however, this cultivar is perfect for day or night time. People who have only smoked cannabis a handful of times all agreed this cultivar was light and did not induce paranoia. This makes it a perfect cultivar for new and veteran cannabis users alike. The biggest caveat is taking it slow. You can always dose more, but if you take too much, all you can do is wait and ride it out. Caution and patience are key.

Summary

Godbud is a remarkable cultivar all around, the smell, the look and even the effects are incredible. Perfect for cannabis consumers from all walks of life God Bud will be the hit in any setting be it a relaxing night with Netflix or a late night at a BBQ. Canada has a lot to be proud of, and today God Bud should be added to that list. 5/5 Highly recommended.
