At least 40 million adults in the United States are suffering from anxiety. According to Anxiety and Depression Association of America, “Only 36.9% of those suffering receive treatment”. One common prescription used to treat a variety of psychiatric disorders is benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines are for short term use and can be extremely addictive. With that being said, some people who suffer from psychiatric disorders have started searching for alternative treatment methods. Due to the fact that cannabis can be used as an effective stress reducer, some people have even started using cannabis for anxiety.

Using Cannabis For Anxiety

There was a recent study conducted to determine why cannabis is an effective stress reducer. According to a statement released by Forbes , “While not conclusive on their own, the results contribute to a longer-term possibility — that marijuana compounds may turn out to be more effective and safer in alleviating anxiety than prescription anxiety meds”. Like the attributes found benzodiazepines, compounds found in cannabis have a unique effect on the levels of the neurotransmitter GABA. GABA is a natural sedative that has calming effects and also contributes to the body’s anxiety response.

More Benefits of Cannabis

Although there is much more research needed, cannabis could eventually be regulated to provide anxiety relief without increased dependency. For those suffering from prescription dependency, this presents itself a possible solution. However, keep in mind that is only the latest research and further cannabis research can cause this outcome to change. If you are thinking about consuming cannabis please consult your doctor first. Do not stop taking your current medication without consulting a medical professional first.
