The Long and Winding Road…To Engineering and Entrepreneurship
Part 2/3 of a reflection series as part of the Cansbridge Fellowship 2021 Cohort
My journey towards computer engineering and entrepreneurship has been a long and winding road that can be traced back to activities and interests explored in my early childhood. Sports, chess, art, music, math, and science expanded my worldview, filled me with a desire to create meaning, and work towards excellence.
At two years old I hit the rink with my father learning to conquer the ice; never deterred no matter how many times I fell down, I pushed myself up back onto my skates ready to try again. My spirit for competition led me to hockey tryouts where I wanted to excel amongst the boys. Competitive soccer also provided an opportunity to develop my skills and work as a team. Through sport, I developed grit and determination, and the desire to play fairly and to win. I didn’t realize it at the time but these skills would prove essential for high performance in all of my life’s endeavours.
When I was in grade four, I had a teacher whose passion was chess. In all my years of schooling and all areas of study, this teacher probably had the greatest impact on my development and finally on my decision to pursue a career in engineering. Learning to play chess…
