The Ambassador: A Flashback

India’s Hindustan Motors recently sold its Ambassador car to France’s Peugeot for a nominal $12 million, signalling the end of an era in the Indian auto industry. Based on the British Morris Oxford, the Ambassador was for three decades India’s bestselling car, and was the preferred mode of transport for politicos in the country.

As we bid adieu to this beauty that we grew up watching and loving, let’s take a look at some of Ambassador’s print advertisements over the years.

The Ambassador : Mark 2 | Production1962–1975 | “Status and Chauffeur rides”
The Ambassador Mark 4 Diesel| 1979
The Ambassador Mark 2 | The Family Car | 1962
The Mark 4 : 1979| Comfort, Style & Performance
The Hindustan ambassador’s production was discontinued in 2014

It’s worth noting that Peugeot came up with an ad a few years ago showing how you can beat down the Ambassador to make a Peugeot 206 for yourself — stylish, charming and contemporary.

Looks like, Peugeot finally got their way after all.

Goodbye old friend, you’ll live on forever in our hearts.
