Q&A with Babayev Elekber: I’m following in my father’s footsteps as a judo coach
Babayev Elekber is an 18-year-old judoka from Baku who studies in ASAPES at the faculty of sport tourism. He has a twin sister and one older sister, and plans to become a judo coach like his father.
What do you think about the attitude to sport in our country?
EB: I think that the interest of young people in the sport is growing. Of course, parents must realise that doing sport is healthy for their children and must inspire their children to participate in sport from childhood.
Why did you choose judo?
EB: My father and his father were both sportsmen. I think my father’s success motivated me to take up judo, as he was twice the USSR champion. Now he continues his career as a coach and also helps me with training.
Who is the judoka you most admire?
EB: Elnur Mammadli. He was the 2008 Olympic Champion.
Do you think that a person must have talent to be successful or is hard work the key?
EB: You must work hard, your family and friends must support you and also you must have an aim.
You started judo when you were seven. Have you won competitions?
EB: Yes, I took second place in the Baku Championships twice.
Can you tell your opinion about ASAPES?
EB: It is a very beautiful place, here we have excellent facilities and the teachers are very good. ASAPES has exceeded all my expectations.
