Why do you think it is important for AAPI’s to be involved in public service?

I think it’s important for AAPIs to be involved in public service because there needs to be more role models to look up to who are working in politics and government or who are public servants. Making our country and our communities better places for everyone means having everyone involved — and that includes AAPIs.

Name one person you look up to and explain why.

Besides my mom, dad, and brother, I look up to Kamala Harris who, like me, is a progressive Asian daughter of immigrants from California. Having just finished reading her book, I’m always inspired by her hard work and intelligence which she balances very well with charisma, humor, happiness, kindness, and a passion for serving people. Senator Harris’ qualities are qualities that I’m continuing to work on and develop during my career in politics and public service as I work in Congress and when I one day work in the White House!

Please share one piece of advice or a hope that you have for the future of Asian America.

With a record of 20 AAPI members serving in this Congress — the highest in history — it can only get better! As more AAPIs get more involved in politics or public service or run for office at the local, regional, state, or national levels, there will be more of us to look up to, to learn from, and to share experiences with, especially as people of color. It can only get better from here!

Lastly, what is your favorite or go-to comfort food and why?

As a native of San Diego and SoCal, my go-to comfort food is always tacos or froyo! But I also love ice cream, sushi, fried chicken, and Thai food because they’re what I eat when I’m not eating tacos or froyo!
