According to these reviews, finding a quality holiday rental for your vacation is harder than it looks. From misogynistic breakfast eggs to a couple discovering a monkey in a cage, let’s find out what happens when holiday accommodation goes really really wrong.

Chris, the owner claims to have over 16 years in hospitality. I don’t know how as she is the most awful person to engage with. Our rooms were fine and the housekeeper was kind. We had no issues until breakfast when we were told that men get 2 eggs and women get 1 egg we thought it was a joke until when we placed our hot breakfast order, we each got one egg.

My self [sic] and my misses booked 3 nights here, and all seem good and well from the pics and reviews. But got there and the rooms are nothing like the pictures. Our first room air con was pathetic (you could do better fanning yourself) and the bathroom smelt of sewage!!! We moved rooms next door, was very dark but seemed better. We went out for the evening and returned to a COCKROACH in our bathroom!! Don’t know how it got in or how it appeared all doors and Windows were shut.

The room itself is awful! The room smelt of sewage and we had to wear our flip flops in the so called shower (which was a cubicle with a hand held shower head). The floor and walls had faeces on it and the toilet, shower and sink were always blocked, there was barely enough water to wash with each day. One day the hotel had no water so we were unable to use the toilet, shower or use the sink for nearly 12 hours!

I have stayed in cheap nasty hotels, but this was something else. On arrival, there was no welcome, just sent to our room to discover a dingy setup, the curtains fell off the rails, so a piece of tissue had been put at the end of one of them, newspaper had been squashed into the window to stop the pane falling out, there were holes in the walls with dodgey wiring, shower was a dribble, bed had springs sticking out, outside the door there was broken tiling with a spoon and knife next to it which sat there for the whole week we stayed. On the first day we decided to go to the pool, to discover a monkey in a cage.

…the manager informed us that we were having a barbecue and entertainment one night, so we thought well maybe you can’t go wrong with a bit of barbecued chicken. Didn’t get chicken. It was a bit of unrecognisable meat on a stick and a bit of flat sausage and fried onions. No knives and forks left, no plates and no salad. On top of all that, the barbecue they used had been left outside our apartment all week, uncovered with all the stray cats peeing and sh+++g all over it. I doubt very much that they cleaned this before use.

Keeping your guests happy is really not rocket science. In fact, when booking a holiday rental, guests are looking for three things.

1. A professional website

A strong online reputation is vital in today’s hospitality environment. A professional, slick website featuring informative text and clear, accurate pictures is the first way to catch a potential customer’s attention. A fine example of such a website is Knight Frank Holiday Rentals. A good site layout, quality pictures and multiples options for holiday letting mean customers will feel more comfortable putting their holiday experience in Knight Frank’s hands.

2. An authentic experience

Modern day luxury travels means being able to connect with the right people to gain access to the best local experiences. When visiting a city like Cape Town in South Africa, the traveller wants to immerse themselves in the rich culture of the area. This means their holiday rental needs to be in a good position close to popular attractions and important local amenities. For this, guests are willing to pay top dollar.

3. Genuine hospitality

These days, holiday rentals are dominating the hotel market share, opening up opportunities for glamorous yet more economical holidays. True hospitality is what your holiday rental does for you — whether it’s the way the owner receives guests or how well the home is equipped with necessary or luxurious facilities.

Contact Knight Frank Holiday Rentals for an impeccable selection of self-catering holiday rental accommodation, and luxury holiday villas in Cape Town and the Western Cape.
