The central government of the United Kingdom provides services to all British citizens. Whether it is to book a driving test, log an import of a product, request a grant, or report their taxes, these services adhere to a common standard, look, and feel. The applicable standards are part of the Government Digital Service (GDS), which establishes requirements for the aesthetics of all sites that ensures the Design System and Frontend are accessible. The navigation and controls on the forms are prescribed for each service to ensure they meet the highest accessibility standards and provide a consistent user experience.

Government Examples

For more than a decade, Capgemini has been a leader in developing external-facing websites for Central Government functions. One of the standards’ goals is to ensure that each service takes in the least amount of time and effort to complete and that it is available to everyone, regardless of ability. Following this principle, we used our experience and understanding of what it takes to meet the rigours of the standard to ensure that Power Pages, a component of the Microsoft Power Platform, can also be used to build quick and accessible external-facing websites.

Why Power Pages (previously Power Apps Portals)

Power Pages is an essential component of the Power Platform that enables businesses to build responsive, secure, feature-rich accessible websites for both internal and external users. Created on top of Dataverse, its low-code methods of defining pages and navigation allow business technologists to create web pages quickly and confidently. This enables businesses to respond to an ever-changing environment, driven by business advocates who are best placed to understand their users’ needs.

The offering allows for a variety of stylistic changes, which Capgemini has embraced to provide a GDS-aligned stylesheet and controls that meet accessibility requirements.

The offering includes a home page with a cookie banner, submit application page, dashboard displaying applications, customer forum, customer support, user profile page, cookie policy page, terms and conditions, and many other features. These templated pages have GDS-compliant, simplistic design, component style, navigation, and functional standards that are preconfigured.

The benefits are multiple:

  • Readily accessible templates that share the same style and design as other GOV.UK services
  • Templates that strictly follow the accessible design guidelines set forth by the GOV.UK
  • Templates can be further customised and extended to alter the content and add new features and capabilities.
  • Templates adhere to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) accessibility standards
  • Power Pages has a robust security model to ensure that business information is properly protected.
  • Utilising industry-leading Azure-backed technologies to ensure the highest grade security and uptime.
