Microsoft Power Apps — Enabling Citizen Developers to Get Building

The shifting business landscape is often seen as frenetic and less predictable than it once was. Business leaders everywhere are now faced with the reality that one must not just innovate, but instead innovate with the kind of speed and accuracy that ten years ago, would have stretched even the most competent teams and change management strategies.

Technology has been instrumental in empowering more agile and specialised teams to compete more evenly with larger and more established teams. These teams are able to break down larger core services into smaller business functions to react to disruptors in the market and changing customer needs.

We have written about an example of this happening within data and analytics in a previous post: Power BI — We can ALL be Data Analysts!

Low Code, High Accessibility

I would like to share with you another revolution, which is also shaping the future of market competition moving forward — Low Code Development.

If big data is the new fuel powering the modern business landscape, then low/no code development is certainly a new catalyst.

Business agility is increasingly on the minds of leaders as the worldwide low code development technologies market continues to grow in 2021. Demand is increasingly outweighing supply and this problem is only expected to grow as the demand for quality and performant applications continues to be driven by a need to stay competitive, despite businesses investing more in IT than at any time in history.

Much like Power BI does for data visualisation, Power Apps enables Citizen Developers to conceptualise, plan and build low code applications that can be deployed in many business scenarios, in a fraction of the time required by traditional development approaches. This does of course depend on the organisations maturity around governance, however Microsoft are even supporting businesses in that space, with the free to use Power Platform Centre of Excellence (CoE) Starter Kit.

The Application Sandbox

Low code development platforms provide visual canvases to create apps and effectively streamlines the development process, making it more manageable and understandable for new entrants to the space. Newly created low code applications can even be integrated with pre-existing business applications to create a more harmonious application landscape.

Because of this approachable sandbox format, businesses are able to empower existing employees to be creative in using the platform to automate their mundane and repeatable tasks on one end of the scale, while assembling a team of SME’s on the other end of the scale to work on new, innovative ideas. An impressive breadth of capability from a single platform.

A new wave of innovation is here, new demands and new challenges to be faced. The choice is in our hands to democratise or despair.

Thanks for reading and look out for future posts, which will cover Low Code in greater detail.

We’re looking for a Digital Workplace Management Consultant, who will work closely with the Microsoft Power Platform. Does this sound of interest to you or someone you know? Take a look at the link above to find out more.
