Fiction Submissions

*Currently closed to submissions. Check back to see when we reopen.*

What we accept:

  • Speculative Fiction: or anything under that umbrella. Just a few of the genres included in that are:

Science Fiction, Fantasy, Space Opera, Steam Punk, Post-Apocalyptic, Horror, Super Heroes, Supernatural, Alternate History, Futuristic, Dystopian, Epic Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Punk, Military SF, Dark Fantasy, Magic Realism, Sword and Sorcery, Fairy Tale Retelling, Hard SF, Paranormal, Science-Fantasy, Utopian, Dark Fantasy.

  • Reprints: provided the story is not already posted on Medium. It’s fine if the story is published on your blog or in a magazine but please include the name of the location where it was previously published, what formats it was published in (audio, print, online) and a link if applicable.

What we do not accept:

  • Multiple submissions.
  • Poetry.
  • Excessive violence or vulgarity. Some is okay so long as it serves a purpose to the plot. Aim for a PG rating.
  • No sex. None. Flirting, kissing, innuendos, and other things of this variety (including implied or “closed door” sex) are fine but absolutely no descriptions of sexual acts should be portrayed in your submission. Again, think PG.

How to submit:

If you are not a Medium member: Send me an e-mail (mckaylaeaton@hotmail.com) with your story pasted in the body of the email. No attachments.

If you are a Medium member: Send me an e-mail (mckaylaeaton@hotmail.com) that includes a link to your Medium profile, and your story pasted in the body of the email. No attachments.

If I accept your story I’ll add you as a writer and send you a confirmation e-mail.

Make sure you have an unpublished draft of your story ready to go on Medium. Once you’ve received confirmation via e-mail go into your draft and select Add to Publications. Capital Letters should be in the drop down menu.

Then, once I approve it, voila, you are published on Capital Letters. Welcome Aboard!

NOTE: If you want to choose an image, you can, but it must be sourced and I have to approve it. Don’t send it in the e-mail, I will approve, or disapprove, it once I receive it via Medium. If I don’t approve your image, or if you do not provide one, I will attach one to the story. I highly encourage you to use this as an opportunity to help out an artist you know or admire. If they have free content you think is a good fit for your story then please make sure to send a link to where ever it is they sell or display their art. I’ll make sure to embed it at the end of your story.

Your draft should:

  • Have a title.
  • Have a tag line beneath the title (but above the image). A tag line should be one sentence that introduces or ‘pitches’ your story. It can sum up the theme or be as simple as “A military SF story.” But no spoilers!
  • Have Short Story as one of its tags.
  • Say THE END at the end.

NOTE: I don’t have time to respond to every submission so I don’t write rejection e-mails. If you haven’t received a confirmation within two weeks it’s a pass, but please feel free to submit other stories!
