Research from eBay reveals that 59% of international consumers have purchased “pre-loved” (second-hand) goods in the past year. And over 70% plan on engaging in recommerce this year. Let’s delve into the key report findings and explore how immersive technologies can benefit recommerce platforms.

Second-hand goods are growing in popularity

Almost two-thirds (66%) of Gen Zers and over 60% of Millennials consider buying pre-loved items to be increasingly important. Young people are notably active in the secondary market, with 9% of Millennials buying second-hand goods weekly and 24% monthly. Consumers aged 25–34 are also prominent purchasers of such goods, with 71% having made such purchases in the past year.

The survey reveals money saving as the main motivation for purchasing pre-loved items, cited by 62% of respondents. Other reasons include sustainability/environmental benefits (26%), difficulty finding specific new items (25%), and the appeal of affordable brands in the pre-loved market (24%). The top five pre-loved purchases globally include clothes (48%), books (34%), shoes (24%), home and garden items (23%), and tech/electronics (22%).

How immersive technologies benefit recommerce platforms

Recommerce platforms must adopt innovative strategies to attract and retain buyers in this highly competitive market. Such platforms can leverage immersive technologies like 3D images to improve consumer shopping experiences. 3D images allow customers to view products from multiple angles, providing a more detailed and interactive shopping experience. This immersive visualization helps customers get a better sense of the product’s design, features, and quality. In turn, this leads to more informed purchasing decisions.

What’s more, engagement with interactive 3D images gives customers a clearer idea of the product’s appearance and dimensions before buying. This transparency helps set accurate expectations, reducing the likelihood of returns due to mismatched expectations. By offering a more immersive and realistic shopping experience recommerce platforms can enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty.

How to integrate immersive technologies into recommerce platforms

Classifieds were unable to integrate immersive retail content, until recently. Mertsy SDK is here to change that. It allows classifieds to integrate the capture and display of 3D product images directly into their mobile apps and websites. Unlike photos and videos, 3D content is fully interactive and provides a complete understanding of the product because it can be viewed from all angles.

In offering such an opportunity a second-hand fashion marketplace will reduce the friction points between buyers and sellers; gaining customer trust in the process. What’s more, after integrating with Cappasity, our clients see higher conversion from search results (6%+), longer time on the product page (15–45+ sec), and higher conversion rates of contacting sellers (12%+).
