When shooting gadgets, we can often face issues because of screen glare, reflections and insufficient brightness. There are some tricks to avoid this that will make shooting easier and more convenient. For example, to get rid of glare, rearrange the light, and black flags will help to remove reflections on the screen. In order to control the brightness of the screen, match the external lighting so that the gadget screen will be brighter against its background. Here at Cappasity, we have prepared a set of useful tips on how to get the perfect 3D View of a gadget in just a few simple steps. Let’s dive right in.

Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary equipment. To make the best 3D image of gadgets, you will need:

  • A turntable
  • A 4k camera
  • A semi-transparent backdrop
  • 5 studio lights (at least 120W)
  • A softbox
  • Black flags for lighting correction

How to avoid reflections on the screen

One of the main complexities with shooting gadgets is that the screen reflects the objects around it. To avoid capturing the reflection of objects on the screen, cover everything in the scene, except for the backdrop, with black flags.

How to make the screen appear brighter

If the screen looks dark in the frame, set the screen brightness to the maximum value, reduce the lighting in the scene and change the exposure until you reach the desired level of screen brightness.

If you are shooting a smart watch and the screen turns off too quickly, do the following: start recording, turn on the watch screen and start the turntable. If you rotate the watch quickly, you will get several seconds of footage with a switched on screen.
