Thinking of your next holiday vacation? Christmas time in Jamaica is one of the best times of the year — carols playing on all of the radio stations, people painting their houses and hanging Christmas decorations, holiday parties all night. During this time, Captain’s Aviation will be operating in full force to bring all travelers to their desired island locations to celebrate in the Jamaican way.

Christmas is one of the most important cultural and religious celebrations in Jamaica, and festivities run from early December all the way through New Year’s day. Check out our featured destinations to see some of the best resorts in Jamaica to spend the holidays.

Christmas is a day that families spend at home with their family members and friends, but Christmas Eve is a time to celebrate. Also called the “Grand Market”, Christmas Eve is a full day of celebrations. In every town and city across Jamaica, there are large festivals and markets where people go shopping for Christmas foods and toys and buy new clothes for the evening celebrations.

At around 6PM, the evening part of the Grand Market begins and continues until the morning. Locals and vacationers come out in their best clothing and party all night. Every street, shop, and house is decorated with lights, and vendors line the streets, selling Jamaican treats like jerk chicken, candy canes, and sugarcane.

After the Grand Market, some people choose to go to a Midnight Mass Church Service, while others stay out and continue to party throughout the night. Many people will then go the a Church Service on Christmas Day morning. These services are full of joyous carol singing and clapping, accompanied by steel drums and reggae versions of popular Christmas songs.

If you are staying at a hotel during this time, you will be able to enjoy an incredible Jamaican Christmas Eve meal that will include fresh fruits, meat, sorrel and rum punch. Christmas Day breakfast will probably consist of ackee and saltfish, fried plantains, boiled bananas, breadfruit, freshly squeezed fruit juice and tea. Christmas dinner will usually start in the late afternoon and will be a large feast with roast chicken or ham, curry goat, stewed oxtail, rice and peas, Jamaican red wine, and rum fruitcake.

The party then continues in Kingston on December 26th or Boxing Day with the National Pantomime performance of The Upsies and de Downzies dem, which is a Christmas show that celebrates Jamaican culture, history, and folklore. At night, you can attend the famous dancehall show, Sting. Further celebrations include beach parties, concerts, and other events across the island.

Regardless of where you stay on the island, you will be able to join the locals and participate in all of these festivities. Christmas in Jamaica truly is, the best time of the year!
