Capturing Attention in Social Media

Social media just like technology is changing constantly and at a rapid pace. New platforms are consistently coming out. These sites are meant to engage and share quickly. This enables people to connect with family, business, events and life in general at rapid speed. This can have both positive and negative engagement. Since Social Media moves at such a fast pace gaining engagement through likes, clicks and shares requires keeping viewers involved and wanting more.

Dr. Jean Kim discussed in Psychology Today, (Dec.2018) Social Media may be hurting our attention span. Due to our lessening ability to pay attention in order to effectively engage others we need to have strategies to encourage and retain our viewers. Especially when using Social Media for marketing and promotion of products and business. Mike Templeman (2016)in his article “Proven Strategies To Boost Social Media Shares And Conversionshe discusses some of these strategies. These included posting in real time, keeping activity current. If it’s a video being posted keep it short, under a minute and half so users do not get bored. In today’s world people are accessing their Social Media anywhere and anytime most likely from their smart phones or tablets, keeping current and to the point is necessary. “Curating Quality Content” as Mike Templeman explains encourages brand recognition, shares, likes and clicks and helps to increase new followers. All of this creates trust in your expertise in a knowledge and a “go to” source. Lastly is use visual content to help encourage engagement.

Maintaining Engagement in Social Media

Once you have how do we keep them? Knowing who your followers are and the posts that are liked help you target to those followers to keep them. This helps to build your brand. Many sites now show you a pop-up stating “cookies are enabled for tracking purpose” As I am involved in supplying some content to our Social Marketing department I share events and activities that show we care as a company about our neighbors. It shows we are real people in the community. Being responsive and talking with your followers is another way to retain engagement. Create a buzz and a conversation, acknowledge and share your follower’s content when appropriate.

Keeping followers engaged will continue to keep getting bigger and bigger. I recently heard we have the attention spans of a goldfish, since so much is constantly coming at us. Keeping active content and appreciating followers will always be in my opinion the way to keep them,
