Part 3 of a multi-part series course. Visit the Connect Learning Academy to take the entire course.

This article’s target is for readers to better understand the basics of the Newsstand application from the iOS 8 operating system.

Newsstand is specifically designed to subscribe to all your favourite magazines and newspapers. This app allows you to subscribe, download and read all of them in this single location. Apple has created this app to operate in three simple steps which are; browse, subscribe, and read! I will break this article down into those three simple steps.

Newsstand’s three simple steps: Browse, Subscribe, and Read.

Browse: how to navigate through the Newsstand Store

When you open up your Newsstand app you will see the blue word Store, located in the bottom right hand corner. Press on Store, using the App Store it will display all of the magazine and newspaper apps available.

The five folders located on the bottom of the screen are greyed out because you are technically not in the App Store. If you press on any folder it will take you out from the Newsstand Store and into the App Store.

Apple has made it real simple to browse for magazine and newspaper apps. You can browse by Interest, Entertainment, Travel, Lifestyle, New, and Canadian Magazines, to do so press on See All to specify your preference.

You also have the option of browsing through magazine and newspaper apps by categories, to do so press on Categories located at the top left hand corner. A drop box will appear with all the choices, press on a category you wish to view all of the apps by.

After you have selected a magazine or newspaper app in the Newsstand Store you are able to read all about the Details, Reviews, and Related. To do so press on the appropriate word you wish to see, these words are located in the middle of the screen printed in the color grey. Details give you the Description, What’s New, Supports, Information, In-App Purchases, Version History, Developer Website, Privacy Policy, and Developer Apps.

Reviews are other reader’s opinions about this magazine, also where you can write your own opinion.

Related are other magazines that you may like that have the same nature.

Also you have the option of sharing any magazine app with others via Message, Mail, Twitter, and Facebook. To do so press on the square box with an arrow located in the top right hand corner.

To revisit all of the magazine apps press on Back located in the top left hand corner.

Subscribe: how to purchase magazines/newspapers

Once you have found a magazine app you would like to subscribe to, you will first have to download it to your Newsstand. To do so press on Get, then press on INSTALL, located underneath the title in the top right hand side.

After it is installed to your Newsstand press on Open. Once you are in the magazine app it will ask you if you want to subscribe or buy issues separately and/or sometimes you have the option to preview a few pages before deciding. Press on either one of those accordingly to your preference.

For an example here are all of the Raw Food issues. Other magazine apps will appear similar in nature. You can purchase the issues individually or you can subscribe monthly to read them all, to subscribe press on Subscribe.

The folder icon in the top left hand corner lets you view All, Private, or Downloads of Raw Food magazines.

You can share this app via Email, Twitter, or Facebook by pressing on the share icon located at the bottom of the screen.

The settings icon located at the bottom of the screen has Raw Food’s contact information, their website publisher, and the Device token number.

This is the view after you have selected one of the issues from the Raw Food magazine app.

Here is a detailed description of what is to be expected in this issue.

To buy this particular issue for $5.99 press on Buy Now. Or to subscribe for a monthly plan press on Subscribe. Or lastly, to view a couple free pages from this issue press on View.

Revisit all the other issues from Raw Food magazine app by pressing on the X located at the top right hand corner.

Return to your Newsstand by pressing on your Home button on your iPhone once.

Read: how to read issues

Each magazine and newspaper app is set up differently; however, they are same in nature so for an example I will use the Raw Food Magazine app to show you how to navigate through the app. To start reading open up your Newsstand app and then press on the magazine app you want to read. From there choose an issue you want to read by pressing on the cover photo.

Read through issues by swiping from right to left like you are reading a real magazine. You can still use your iPhone’s zoom feature with this app. And there are also live links throughout the issues that you can use just by tapping on them.

When reading an issue you will always be presented with two tool bars located at the top and bottom of the screen. To access these tool bars at any time just tap on the screen anywhere.

In the top tool bar you have the Home button which will take you back to all the issues from the Raw Food magazine app. You have the option of sharing this issue via Facebook, Twitter, and Email by pressing on the share icon. You also can print this issue by pressing on the printer icon.

The bottom tool bar is a numbered page grid where you can access any page of the issue quicker just by pressing on the bottom of the screen.

To exit from any issue you are reading press the Home button on your iPhone, this will bring you back to your Newsstand.

So those are the basic guidelines to using the iOS 8: Newsstand application. To briefly summarize we learned that the Newsstand application is a single location where you can browse, subscribe, and read all your magazine and newspaper apps. We also went over in basic detail how to navigate through the Newsstand Store, how to purchase magazines/newspapers, and how to read issues from magazine apps.
