Building on what’s solid and secure
Data is one of the most valuable assets in a modern business. Collecting it is easy enough (storage is cheap), but sorting it in ways that are truly useful is the difficult part.
This is where data architecture comes in. It’s the difference between a box to put the digital side of your business in, and a designed space — bespoke to your needs, scalable as you grow.
Aligning your business with your data should be informed by two things: the operational practices of your business, and the architectural best practices in data storage.
Step 1: Build a foundation by modelling the business
There is a union between design form and function, and this is the foundation on which all design disciplines operate, including data architecture.
Data architecture should establish a logical model that mirrors the attributes and detailed relationships of the actual business (i.e. it should logically trace how the business functions).
True business modelling for data architecture follows relationship rules in an organized fashion. An elemental foundation for modelling the business comes from knowing the business, and working hand-in-hand with stakeholders to customize the most logical solution.
Step 2: Use naming methodology best practices
The principles used in naming entities and attributes (as expressed through a data architecture’s models and metadata) make a huge difference in the volume of information imparted to the end user.
Constructing a container for data is not enough. Naming entities and attributes across their context, qualifiers and function, as well as making it NoSQL helps to provide end users with accurate and complete data sets that make actionable insights all the more possible. Furthermore, such naming accuracy can simplify graphical depiction and other representations that will help make sense of operations.
Architecture becomes the difference between a haystack of data and repertoire of information.
