How to Stampede

Calgarians know that this time of year is filled with “YAHOOS” and “YEEHAWS.” If you’re not a Calgarian, let me give you a quick description of what Stampede is about. Picture 10 amazing days filled with pancakes, sticky syrup, cowboy boots, rides, fried food, and of course beer. Lots and lots of beer, I mean it is known as the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.”

So whether you’ll be spending some quality time with the kids or cracking open a cold one. We’ve laid out some hacks to help you through the Stampeding week.

  • This week will be HOT. Try bringing a small spray bottle with water and ice, give yourself a quick spritz whenever you’re feeling the sun sizzle.
  • Keep hydrated—bring a water bottle or two. Not keeping hydrated—especially if you will be drinking some booze—can lead to heatstroke and trust me that will end the fun.
  • Protect and prevent. Store your sunscreen in the fridge the day before you leave, so when you’re out and about you have some cool lotion to keep you chilly.
  • If you do end up getting a little bit toasty, freeze some aloe vera gel into ice cubes, so when you’re ready to apply, it will be extra soothing.
  • There’s TONS of free stampede breakfasts and BBQs happening around the city. Plus we’ll be visiting a few during the week, so come out and say hey!
  • The Grandstand is an amazing show to watch (or so i’ve heard…)! But if you’re strapped for cash, you can check out some rare puppers at the Canine Stars, some air junkies at the Bell Adrenaline Ranch, the new High Divers Act, or challenge a friend at the Adventure Park!
  • If you haven’t already heard, the AGLC has extended the happy hours for restaurants. They can now serve discounted drinks until closing! Of course only some selected places are able to offer this. The list includes Craft, the Guild, and Knoxville’s.
  • The 1:1. A good way to fix a hangover is to prevent it in the first place. By pairing up each drink with a water you will definitely help to ensure your head isn’t pounding the day after.
  • Eat your way through it. Carbs are great to help absorb the alcohol. Along with some bananas, keeping up your potassium is almost as important as staying hydrated. Lastly, if you know you have a wild night ahead, go ahead and indulge in foods! Greasy foods slow down the alcohol absorption. Plus you get to try all the sweet food at the midway!
  • DON’T keep drinking—even though many people believe otherwise. Drinking more will contribute to dehydration. It may be a quick fix, but be ready to feel the consequences later on.

Safe sober driving and happy Stampeding Calgary!
