Once upon a time in a distant land, there stood a mighty moai. For centuries, “Moyai” stood watch over the land, observing the cycles of the world as it changed and evolved around him.

As the years passed, Moyai became a beacon of wisdom and understanding of the markets and its intricacies. Over time, many would congregate around Moyai, forming a fellowship of like minded compatriots who seek his inspiration and counsel when they needed help navigating the complexities of trading.

Despite the many changes that took place in the land, Moyai remained a constant presence, always standing tall and proud, a symbol of endurance in an ever-changing world.

As a design contributor looking to design an icon for Carbon, there were many considerations to take into account for the right approach for Carbon.

I started with 3 distinct audiences in mind.

  1. Retail traders: Traders seek easier ways to profit off crypto volatility and swing trade the market
  2. Institutions: Institutions value sophisticated products they can rely on.
  3. Degens: Degens have Web3 values and want to associate with a cutting-edge community that is cool and where they have a voice to help guide the direction of the protocol. (I use the term “Degen” with great affection, many contributors self identify as degens themselves)
Selection of finance brands running the gamut from traditional finance to defi.

When exploring the competitive landscape, an idea I and other contributors became interested in pursuing is could we develop an icon that speaks to all 3 audience groups.

An extra objective was to find an emoji the community could use when talking about Carbon, hopefully they would show their love for Carbon by including the “Moyai” emoji in their social handles like in many other crypto communities.

This approach goes for a distinct, memorable, meme-able mascot/emoji 🗿, to relate to the crypto community/culture. At the same time using a stoic, black and white Icon to convey a sense of stability, endurance and authority.

The Moai Emoji renders differently on each platform. Across Apple, Google, Twitter etc.

What’s a Moai?

lit. ‘statue’

In Japanese, the word “Moyai” means “meeting for a common purpose” and the Moai statues represent stability, endurance and authority.

Carbon Wordmark

Solid black and white Carbon wordmark is the primary logo to convey a sense of authority and trust.

Cheers to an exciting 2023!

PS. It was once thought that these statues were partials, but after excavating have been found to have full bodies simply buried in the ground. This can be analogous to the tip of the iceberg that carbon represents in relation to the innovation of adjustable bonding curves and asymmetric liquidity.
