The Red Dot Design Award is considered to be one of the most prestigious awards in the design industry. “Red Dot” has become established internationally as one of the most sought-after seals of quality for good design. The Red Dot Design Awards are distributed into three disciplines to accurately recognize excellence in diverse fields of the design industry: Product Design, Brands & Communication Design, and Design Concept.

The Carbon Design System received a Red Dot Design Award for 2022 in the Brands & Communication discipline. The design system was recognized as a winner in the Interface & User Experience Design category for creating an open source design system for products and digital experiences that are user focused and accessible to everyone, regardless of ability or situation. With the IBM Design Language as its foundation, the system consists of working code, design tools and resources, human interface guidelines, and a vibrant community of contributors.

The Carbon Design System is sponsored and maintained by IBM, which means we build for the company’s business needs, but we’ve made it open source for anyone to use and contribute back to. The system also serves various parts of the IBM business that follow an inner source model and is committed to helping the community succeed in adopting and using our assets.

Based on the IBM Design Language, the IBM brand expression guidance, every element and component of the system was designed from the ground up to work together to ensure consistent, cohesive user experiences. Components are modular, flexible, and designed to work with each other in whichever combination suits the user’s needs. The system conducts rigorous research into users’ needs and highlights inclusivity.

Earlier this year, we shipped the next major release (v11) of the Carbon Design System. The release focused on quality of life updates for designers and developers. Some of these updates include improvements to color and type tokens, more theming flexibility, and enhancing component accessibility.

Congratulations to the team!

Congratulations to the Carbon Design System team and thank you to everyone who has helped shape the system into what it is today:
