Deciding which type of wallet you would like to use, can be confusing at times, especially if you are new to the crypto ecosystem. There are those of you who prefer to spend more time on your laptop/desktop over mobile phones and then, there are a lot of folks who run their entire businesses from their smart phones.

Well, to make it inclusive for everyone and to avoid the confusion of choosing, CardWallet is excited to announce our Web Wallet! The web version CardWallet is now available in addition to a mobile wallet as well.

The web version of the wallet is not a browser extension, and will not have dApp connectivity. It is a different concept.

In order to understand a bit more about the advantages of a web wallet and the motivation behind this feature, let us understand a little more about wallets in general.

TL:DR — The CardWallet Web Wallet is a browser-based wallet that does not collect any information whatsoever about the user. If you close the tab, you’ll need to restore from seed. There is no session data, no link to any device, no cookies, no login or password. Only you and your seed phrase, so be sure to keep it safe.

We can feel the smile from those of you who are particularly picky about your privacy.

Simply head over to https://web.cardwallet.fi/ to create a new wallet or import from an existing seed phrase.

You can also reach the Web Wallet from the button on CardWallet’s main landing page.

What are cryptocurrency wallets?

A cryptocurrency wallet is an application for generating, storing and managing cryptographic keys. There are two types of keys — public and private key, both of which are essential to manage the funds in the wallet.

With a basic cryptocurrency wallet, you can send and receive funds as well as manage your balances. There are intermediate and advanced wallets which offer more functionalities like connecting with various decentralized applications, being able to invest/trade using the wallet, etc. There are two types of wallets — hardware wallets and software wallets. The mobile and web wallets are software wallets.

There aren’t too many features that distinguish the mobile and the web wallets except for the device they’re being used on and a few UI/UX changes. The non-custodial nature of CardWallet would persist in the web version as well. These types of web wallets are also known as non-hosted wallets where the keys are not hosted on a centralized server, rather with the user.

However, there are some significant advantages of having a web wallet. Let us see what they are.

What are the advantages of having a web wallet?

  • One benefit to desktop crypto wallets is that you are in control of your seed phrase and therefore your funds, and don’t need to rely on a third party to hold your cryptocurrency. It is non-custodial, however with a higher degree of separation, as it is not hosted on a specific device.
  • Web wallets have a higher level of protection than mobile wallets, for those who understand know how to protect their personal computers. Higher privacy level is achieved as there is no link to a physical device.
  • In addition to being convenient to use (removing the hassle of downloading an app on your phone), you can use it as a quick throwaway wallet for simple purposes.
  • Web wallets are great in the case your phone is lost, stolen or seized. This is where the web version of the wallet can help you by being a great backup to swiftly sweep your funds to a new secure place.
  • Unlike wallets which are browser extensions, web versions of wallets are both browser brand, version and OS agnostic.

Web wallets can facilitate easier user experience and help you manage the crypto assets stored in your wallet with even higher privacy than mobile. We are quite excited to introduce this feature to the community and would love to hear your feedback on your experience with our recently launched web wallet version.
