Human Trafficking In India

India has been ranked as a “Tier II Watch List” country – only one level
better than worst-performing Tier III countries such as Saudi Arabia and
Zimbabwe – in the 2010 Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP) compiled by
the State Department. The definition of Tier II Watch List in the
TIP,implies that India ranks among those countries whose governments
“do not fully comply with the Trafficking Victims Protection Act’s (TVPA)
minimum standards, but are making significant efforts to bring
themselves into compliance with those standards.”It is considered as the
second largest organised crime in India. Human trafficking is still a
major issue in India, despite the fact that it is banned under Indian
law. People are trafficked illegally through India for sexual
exploitation and forced labor. According to some estimates, forced
labour affects millions of Indians.According to a study 20 million
commercial prostitutes in India, 16 million women and girls are
victims of sex trafficking.According to statistics of India, every hour,
four girls in India are trafficked, three of them against their
will.According to a report, around 700-800 children are stuck in the
red light area of Nagpur, India. It was found that 21% of the
households are potentially ready to send their children into child labor
due to their increased economic vulnerability. The data also showed
that the case rate of human trafficking was 10.6 per cent. Among
states, Maharashtra and Telangana recorded the highest number of
such cases at 184 each, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 171, Kerala at
166, Jharkhand at 140 and Rajasthan at 128.In 2019, the government
completed prosecution in 600 trafficking cases, convicted 306
traffickers in 160 cases, and acquitted 1,329 suspects in 440 cases.
The rate for trafficking cases was 73 percent in 2019. Though
percentage-wise 2019 seems an improvement over 83 percent seen
in 2018, the number of convicted traffickers fell to 306 in 2019 from
322 in 2o18.The number of suspects acquitted in 2019 increased
from 1,124 in 2018 to 1,329.In 2020, over 900 human traffickingcases were reported with over three thousand victims across India.
The state of Maharashtra had the highest number of human trafficking
cases in the country with over 150 cases.Still India is trying its best to
overcome this problem as soon as possible because it is growing day
by day.
